Plant genotype, nutrients, and G3 E interactions structure floral visitor communities

چکیده
Intraspecific variation in plants is driven by both genetic and environmental factors and has been shown to play an important role in determining assemblages of herbivores, predators, and pathogens. Yet, the consequences of genetic (G) and environmental (E) factors, as well as potential (G3E) interactions, for floral visitor communities remains poorly explored. In a common garden experiment, we compared the relative effects of host-plant genotype and genotypic diversity as well as soil nutrient enrichment on floral resource abundance and insect floral visitors associated with tall goldenrod, Solidago altissima. We found that the floral visitor community varied considerably among genotypes, driven predominantly by variation in floral phenology among S. altissima clones. Floral visitors also varied among nutrient treatments, though this response was much weaker than to different plant genotypes, and was likely driven by effects of floral rewards rather than of floral phenology. Importantly, we also detected several G3 E interactions for both flowering and floral visitors. Taken together, our results suggest that the effects of host-plant genetic variation, and to a lesser extent G 3 E interactions, are key agents in structuring the diversity and composition of floral visitors.

Disruption of a belowground mutualism alters interactions between plants and their floral visitors.
Plants engage in diverse and intimate interactions with unrelated taxa. For example, aboveground floral visitors provide pollination services, while belowground arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) enhance nutrient capture. Traditionally in ecology, these processes were studied in isolation, reinforcing the prevailing assumption that these above- and belowground processes were also functionally d...

BACKGROUND In the emerging field of community and ecosystem genetics, genetic variation and diversity in dominant plant species have been shown to play fundamental roles in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem function. However, the importance of intraspecific genetic variation and diversity to floral abundance and pollinator visitation has received little attention. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL F...

Theory argues that both soil conditions and aboveground trophic interactions are equally important for 14 determining plant species diversity. However, it remains unexplored how they modify the niche di erences 15 that stabilise species coexistence and the average fitness di erences driving competitive dominance. 16 We conducted a field study in Mediterranean annual grasslands to parameterise p...

In this study, molecular characterization of Echinococcus granulosus sample obtained from water buffalo originating from southwest of Iran was performed using comparative sequence analysis of cox1 mitochondrial gene. DNA was extracted from protoscoleces removed from hydatid cyst from the liver of a 2-year-old male buffalo slaughtered in Khuzestan province. Molecular and phylog...
متن کاملFunctional homogenization of flower visitor communities with urbanization
Land-use intensification and resulting habitat loss are put forward as the main causes of flower visitor decline. However, the impact of urbanization, the prime driver of land-use intensification in Europe, is poorly studied. In particular, our understanding of whether and how it affects the composition and functioning of flower visitor assemblages is scant, yet required to cope with increasing...
